A CESSNOCK jail inmate has been charged with a string of offences concerning the discovery of weapons and explosives in bush just kilometres from the prison.

The 26-year-old has been charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, possession of a weapon without a permit, possessing explosives, possession of detonator cords, possessing ammunition and receiving.

The cache of weapons was discovered after a prison officer found a letter alleged to have been written by the inmate informing a family member where to find the weapons, together with a map.

Prison staff and police seized a .243 bolt-action rifle and 2000 rounds of ammunition.

The inmate will face Cessnock Local Court on December 22.
