Fellow Prisoner Confessed, Says Gonzales

A month after his triple murder conviction police resources are still devoted to investigating further claims of Sef Gonzales, including the latest that an inmate has confessed to the killings and another that a Seaforth murder is linked to the crime.

One of Gonzales' staunchest supporters, parish priest Father Paul Cahill, sent a letter to the Department of Public Prosecutions following his guilty verdict on May 20, expressing concern about the trial. He said a claim Gonzales had made about another prisoner confessing to the murders had not been investigated.

Gonzales, 23, was convicted of the stabbing murders of his father Teddy, mother Mary Loiva and sister Clodine at their family home in North Ryde in July 2001.

He has told confidants that a prisoner awaiting trial on another murder charge confessed to the murders, and says this was revealed to him by another inmate who overheard a conversation.

Police say Gonzales had told his defence team this information before his trial but they did not use it in evidence.

Gonzales has also been telling another of his supporters in a separate claim that he believes convicted killer Matthew McLean, 22 - who stabbed Stephen Tonkiss to death in Seaforth - may be involved in the killing of his family.

Inspector Michael Sheehy, head of Strike Force Tawas, which investigated the Gonzales murders, said police would begin interviewing prisoners today.
