A former director-general of Corrective Services will conduct an independent audit and investigation into operating procedures at Kariong juvenile detention centre. The inquiry by Vernon Dalton follows revelations that an 18-year-old inmate convicted of pack rape engaged in a sex act with a female visitor during a contact visit in the presence of other visitors, including children. The Minister for Juvenile Justice, Di Beamer, said yesterday that police were investigating how a surveillance tape showing the incident was released to the Opposition and media.
