60 Minutes Signs Habib

The media bidding war for the story of the freed terrorist suspect Mamdouh Habib has ended with Channel Nine signing the former Guantanamo Bay inmate for an exclusive interview on its current affairs flagship, 60 Minutes.

A Nine spokesman last night confirmed the network had finalised negotiations with Mr Habib and his lawyer, Stephen Hopper, late last week. He would not comment when asked whether Mr Habib was being paid. However, the Herald understands money has changed hands.

Mr Habib is expected to spend the week filming with 60 Minutes' Tara Brown, and the story will air on Sunday when the program returns after its summer hiatus.

Mr Habib is believed to have considered several offers that were made even before his release from the US military prison, where he had been held without charge for more than three years.
