Prisoner In Court On 47 Counts

A PRISON inmate appeared in Newcastle Local Court yesterday on 47 charges including five major counts of breaking, entering stealing involving property worth at least $173,000.
Scott Andrew Lewins, 35, of St Heliers Correctional Centre, did not enter pleas to the charges, which comprised 27 counts of breaking, entering and stealing, 14 of breaking and entering with intent, and six counts of stealing motor vehicles.The charges said that Lewins committed the offences on commercial premises throughout the Lower Hunter between December 2001 and January this year. One of the charges alleged that Lewins broke into the Hexham workshop of Gilbert and Roach during 2002 and stole a tip truck containing a large safe, tool boxes and truck tyres worth $88,720.A second alleged that Lewins broke into Eatons Hotel at Muswellbrook in May last year and stole $18,000 from a safe, an automatic teller machine containing $3300, and a quantity of assorted bottles of alcohol.Lewins was returned to custody on another sentence after magistrate Richard Wakely adjourned the new case until August 10.
