MOUSTAFA HABIB, the teenage son of the former Guantanamo Bay inmate Mamdouh Habib, had mace sprayed in his face by police after the shooting in Granville on Wednesday night.

Mr Habib and his son were driving down Blaxcell Street at the time of the shooting, in which two people died.

A Habib family lawyer, Peter Erman, said a series of misunderstandings led to the fracas involving the police and the two Habibs. "[Mamdouh] Habib actually called the police," Mr Erman said.

"He was happy to provide the police with a statement. However, he wanted to take his car and his son back home first. The police had other ideas because they said his car was part of the crime scene."

The Habibs objected when police tried to prevent them driving off. Mr Erman said Moustafa intervened and was sprayed with mace. There were further exchanges of a physical nature as Mr Habib tried to "prevent an injury to his son".

Police said neither Mr Habib nor his son had any connection to the Granville killings.
